Dr. Powell is a diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery with a special interest in thoracic oncology and minimally invasive lung surgery. He is a native of Southern California having completed his residency in general surgery at UC Irvine as well as extensive research in lung physiology, emphysema and lung cancer. After completing his thoracic surgery fellowship training at UC San Francisco, he was recruited to New Jersey to develop the LUNGCARE comprehensive Cancer Center at CentraState, an affiliate of UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. While at the center, he and his team established several clinical trials, introduced new technology and established themselves as the regional referral center for lung cancer care.
The scope of his practice here in Orange County covers all areas of thoracic surgery, benign and malignant disease, video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), and chest wall pathology. His program offers a special focus on the early detection of lung cancer and the surgical management of advanced lung cancers.
